RTX 3090 vs RTX A6000: which should you buy?

Hardware advice reviewed 2026-10-20 · asking-price samples checked for freshness · Methodology

A 24GB consumer card versus a 48GB workstation card for local AI. The RTX A6000 is the Ampere model, not the RTX 6000 Ada or RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell.

Verdict: Choose the RTX 3090 when 24GB is enough and its complete purchase cost is lower. Consider the RTX A6000 when your workload needs more than 24GB on a single GPU or requires its workstation features. The A6000 doubles installed memory; that does not mean double the inference speed.

Verify model fit before buying

Memory capacity alone cannot tell you which models run. Check the artifact, runtime, context and concurrency, including cache and working buffers. Mac memory is shared with the operating system. See our memory sizing guide.

When 48GB changes the buying decision

The A6000 can be a candidate for workloads too large for a single 24GB 3090. Reserve memory for context, concurrent requests and buffers. A model parameter count alone cannot guarantee that an artifact will fit in 48GB.

Workstation features versus purchase cost

NVIDIA specifies 48GB GDDR6 with ECC on the RTX A6000. Decide whether capacity, ECC or application requirements matter to your work before paying a workstation premium. Neither the model name nor memory capacity establishes performance for a particular LLM.

One A6000 or two 3090s?

Two 24GB cards do not automatically become one 48GB allocation. A runtime must support splitting the workload, and each device still has its own memory limit. Include motherboard slots, cooling, power and any interconnect in the cost of a dual-card build.

FAQ

Is an RTX A6000 twice as fast as an RTX 3090?

No such conclusion follows from its 48GB capacity. It has twice the installed memory, but throughput needs a matching workload benchmark.

Can two RTX 3090s replace one RTX A6000?

Sometimes, if your runtime supports the required split and the host can accommodate both cards. They are not a drop-in replacement for a single 48GB device.
